In a divine wisdom of the acceptable prayers offered to God, the psalmist declared, "Let my prayer arise like incense before you..." (Ps 141:2). In his vision of the throne of God in the heavens, St. John, the author of Revelation, saw "golden bowls that were full of incense, and the incense means the prayers of the holy ones." The offering of incense in the Liturgy brings the faithful closer to the transcendent glory of God seen and expressed by the inspired authors of Scripture and gives a taste of heaven, where cleansed from sin, the saints offer perfect divine worship to God for all eternity.
